"You Are Not Alone"

The You Are Not Alone program of our group and foundation was started in 2005. Its aim is to help children from orphanages with various physical disabilities and problems who need expensive treatment using modern techniques. This project is of special social significance, because many of such children after early medical intervention and adequate rehabilitation can have a normal further life. Note that it is the only specialized program in Russia for providing timely diagnostic services and qualified treatment to orphans. Moreover, orphanages in Russia are overfilled (and most children there are so-called social orphans, i.e., boys and girls left by their parents), but children after such timely treatment will have more chances to find a new family.
Within the framework of this program, we are fulfilling the following tasks:

  • Creation of a database on orphan children
  • Organization of visiting groups of specialists to examine children in orphanages in various regions of the Russian Federation
  • Financing of the children's transportation to the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital together with persons accompanying them (if necessary)
  • Hiring of nurses who will take care of orphan patients at the hospital; payment for their work
  • Financing of expensive kinds of treatment, which are not provided to Russian citizens free of charge (not included in the system of compulsory medical insurance)
Orphan patients at the hospital
Visits of specialists to various regions

From 2005 to May 2008, a total of 247 orphan patients from various regions of the Russian Federation, from Moscow to Far East, received treatment at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. Most of them were admitted to the Departments of Maxillofacial Surgery, Urology, Neurosurgery, and Psychoneurology. Among these children, 77 received expensive high-tech treatment.
For some patients, precise diagnosis of their disorders required additional examinations, such as genetic or microbiological ones. Payment for these examinations (above 160,000 roubles, or $6400) was provided by our Foundation.
Also, the Foundation bought medications and rehabilitation appliances that are not purchased by the hospital within budgetary financing. The children were provided with the necessary food, hygienic goods and clothes. The sum allotted for these needs was 356,070 roubles ($14,250).
The Foundation used 1,018,731 roubles ($40,750) to buy equipment and consumables for orphan patients of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery.
Children under 8 and also children who needed special care during their in-hospital treatment were provided with nurses. The total sum spent to pay for the nurses' work was 1,855,486 roubles ($74,220).

After treatment at our hospital and correction of congenital or acquired disorders, 17 children were taken into new families (adoption or foster care).
For further development of this program, we need a new rehabilitation center for orphan patients, which will enable us

  • To increase the number of orphan patients that can undergo serious multistage treatment at our hospital at a time
  • To get rid of organizational difficulties during long-term treatment
  • To make this treatment more efficient and to provide higher quality of the children's life during it.
